Notes
a. Note:   [William1.FTW]
John's middle name "James" is found only in Orman Speed's list in Evelyn Speer's SPEER FAMILY DISK. William Sr. was living in Long Cane (Abbeville) in 1784 and did not move to Cherokee Ford (Cherokee Heights) until 1785; therefore John probably was born in Abbeville.
John drowned: Bells Ford near Rampey's Mill; Rocky River, near Lowndesville, Abbeville County, South Carolina, USA
Rampey's Mill was earlier known as Caldwell's Mill (1830) and C.W. Barne's Mill No. 2. Rampey's Mill was washed away in a 1908 flood. A later mill at the same site was called Price's Mill, which operated into the 1920's. Caldwell's Mill was in the same area or was another name for one of the above mills.
The name Bells Ford does not come from Hunter; it comes from ??????.
During an interview with Lewis Speer on 3 July 1994 in Lowndesville, he gave the following account of the drownning. Lewis' story orginally came from Gordon Speer. John drove his horse-drawn buggy across the flooded river in spite of warnings that it was too dangerous. The traces came loose and when he reached down to reconnect them, he fell in and was washed away. John's tombstone reads: "SACRED to the memory of JOHN SPEER ESQR, BORN 5 NOVR. 1784, United with His Presbyterian Church in 1809. Ordained a Ruling Elder in 1816. Died 20th April 1866. Firm and deadicated in character; he was long spared, to adorn his profession and office. He rests from his labors. Oh Death where is thy sting."
In addition to John, the following people were listed as living in his household: Free White Males: 2 10-15 years old 1 15-20 years old 1 40-50 years old Free White Females: 1 0-5 years old 1 15-20 years old 1 30-40 years old Male Servants: 1 10-24 years old 1 24-36 years old 2 36-55 years old Female Servants: 5 0-10 years old 1 10-24 years old 3 24-36 years old John's name is listed as "Spear". In addition to John, the following people are listed as living in his household: Free White Males: 2 20-30 years old 1 50-60 years old Free White Females: 1 10-15 years old 1 40-50 years old Male Servants: 2 0-10 years old 2 10-24 years old 1 24-36 years old 3 36-55 years old Female Servants: 2 0-10 years old 5 10-24 years old 3 24-36 years old 1 36-55 years old
Fourteen of these people are listed as working in argiculture.
John's occupation is given as Farmer with real estate worth $8,896 and personal estate worth $32,474. John's name is incorrected listed as "John Spears". John housed 1 servant. Eight unidentified people lived in John's household: 2 males and 2 females age 0-10 1 male and 1 female age 10-16 1 male age 26-45 1 female age 16-26
  John housed 7 Servants: 1 male age 0-16 1 male age 16-26 1 male and 2 females age 26-45 1 male and 1 female age >45
