Notes
a. Note:   [William1.FTW]
Alexander served in the 3rd Battalion North Carolina Light Artillery. The battalion, under the command of Major John Wheeler Moore, was organized at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh and mustered into CSA service as the 3rd Battalion N.C. Light Artillery on 20 MAY 1862. The battalion, commonly called "Moores's Battalion", saw service at: York River Railroad, Richmond, VA. Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad Bridge over the North Anna River, Fredericksburg, VA. White Hall, Neuse River, NC. Goldsboro, NC. Wilmington, NC. Kenansville, NC. Smithville, NC. Fort Fisher, NC. Fort Anderson, NC. Bentonville, NC.
Andrew's detailed service is unrecorded. He was paroled at Greensboro 1 MAY 1865 following the surrender of General Joe Johnson to General Sherman. Andrew's tombstone reads: "A Christian man. A Physician beloved." His tombstone also exhibits a large Mason symbol.
Andrew bought and lived for many years in a two-story house built about 1858 by Julius F.C. DuPre. Lawrence Speer, amoung others, also lived in this house. It is now owned by Mrs. Carley.
It is assumed that Andrew graduated with a medical degree before March of 1858 since he was addressed as "Dr" at that time (his first marriage).
Dorctor A.J. Speer bought the land and building of the Female Academy about 1891. See Ref QP for details on the location of the school house.
