Notes
a. Note:   [William1.FTW]
George Washington Speer, Sr.'s house has been remodled and is currently the residence of the Robert Mark Speer family. Col George McDuffie Miller was the leader of Company G. This was probably a relative of Mary Sue Giles. George joined 20 Jul 1861 at Camp Pickens, Anderson, South Carolina for 3 years or the war. His age is given as 23. This company later became Company B, 1st Regiment, South Carolina Rifles (Orr's Rifles). George was transferred to Hampton's Legion by order of General Lee. George joined at Camp Pickens in Anderson, South Carolina. His unit was Captain James M. Perrin's Company of Orr's Regiment of South Carolina Rifles. This company later became Co B, 1st Regiment, South Carolina Rifles (Orr's Riflels). Camp Pickens probably was the old muster grounds (McCaws Old Field) for the Community of Monterey. G. Spires (George Washington Speer?) was surrendered by General Robert E. Lee on 09 Apr 1865. His unit was part of Gary's Cavalry Brigade. The 1894 map shows the "G.W. Speer" house located north of Monterey.
George was sick in the hospital at Lynchburg. He was subjected to stoppage for an Enfield Rifle, valued at $50. George was still subjected to stoppage for one $50 Enfield Rifle. George was still subjected to stoppage for $9.80 for lost Enfield Rifle.
George signed a reciept for compensation of rations for $15 at Camp Gregg? His signature reads: Geo W. Speer.
He died from malnutrition at his home, Monterey, Abbeville County, South Carolina, USA
