Notes
a. Note:   [William1.FTW]
William Speer, Jr.'s Family Bible lists a Margaret Eliza Speer (born 8 Dec 1825) between the births of his daughter Mary Elizabeth and his twins Elijah and Mary Eleanor. It is not known who Margaret Eliza Speer is. Apparently she is a daughter of William, Jr.; however no reference to her can be found any where else. Different dates are given in various reports. Many are the same, however Samuella Speer lists 07 May 1788 and 09 May 1790. The date 09 May 1788 is given by Snowden, 1920, Wm Speer Jr, 1869, Wynn, 1984, Holcomb, 1993b, and William Arthur Speer, Jr., 1994. The Wm Speer, Jr. Family Bible gives an age of 88 years at death. The Wm Speer, Jr Estate Packet at the Abbeville Courthose indicates that he was born in 1788. Snowden, 1920 indicates that William, Jr "lived past 1872"; Wynn, 1984 gives "after 1872". The Millers live in the remodled William Speer, Jr. house at Monterey, South Carolina. During remodling, old numbered boards were found, indicating that William, Jr's house was built from an even older house. Presumbly the older house was William, Sr's house which was originally built at Cherokee Ford on the Savannah River in 1785. William's tombstone lists his age at death as 88 years, 8 months and 1 day. William's name is listed as "W. Spear". The following people are listed as living in William's household: Free White Males: 2 0-5 years old 1 10-15 years old 2 20-30 years old 1 50-60 years old Free White Females: 3 10-15 years old 1 40-50 years old Male Servants: 1 0-10 years old 5 10-24 years old 1 24-36 years old 1 55-100 years old Female Servants: 3 0-10 years old 6 10-24 years old 2 24-36 years old 1 36-55 years old
Sixteen of these people are listed as working in agriculture. William's occuption is listed as Farmer with real estate worth $10,000 and personal estate worth $22,000. William's son George Washington Speer, Sr. is listed as Overseer. William's name is incorrectly spelled "Spears". Four unidentified people live in his household: 2 males age 10-16 1 male age greater than 45 1 female age 16-26 (wife Mary Sue Gill) William housed 14 servants. In addition to Mary Sue Gill, William Houston, John Alexander, and Sarah Elenor, 2 unidentified males age 16-26 also lived in William's househole. William also housed 9 servants: 6 males and 1 female age 0-16 1 male and 1 female age >45
William inventoried the estate of Richard Moseley on 26 Dec 1831. William, Jr was wounded during his service in the Mexican War (Wallace, 1934, p. 287).
Sold to Bannister Allen on 26 Oct 1875. Evidently to cover large financial obligations of William Speer, Jr. The first U.S. Post Office was established at Monterey on 06 May 1847. The name was choosen to honor the South Carolina soldiers, especially those from Abbeville County, that fought in the Mexican War. William, Jr. was the first to settle at Monterey and since he took part in the Mexican War, it is assumed that he choose the name for his homestead (A.J. Speer). Wallace, 1934 attributes the name Monterey to William, Jr. (see also Carroll, 1979, Ref IX & OO). William Andrew Giles was the first Post Master.
Name given as William Alexander Speer in FTM's World Family Tree, v. 5, tree 321 (unknown source)
