Notes
a. Note:   [William1.FTW]
The name is given as "Alexander M. Speer" in Wynn, 1984; and Orman Speed's History. "When the legislature convened in November 1828, cotton prices were down to eight cents a pound, and a strong political faction led by the State's tight-fisted Comptroller General Alexander Speer, an Abbeville native, pushed hard for drastic reduction in state spending" (Ford, Jr., L.K., 1988, p. 18). In addition to Alexander, the following people were listed as living in his household: Free White Males: 1 0-5 years old 2 10-15 years old 1 40-50 years old Free White Females: 1 0-5 years old 1 5-10 years old 1 30-40 years old Alexander also housed 35 Servants: Males: 10 0-10 years old 6 10-24 years old 2 24-36 years old 1 36-55 years old Female: 6 10-24 years old 4 24-36 years old 5 36-55 years old 1 55-100 years old Inaddition to Algernon Sidney and Alexander Middleton, four unidentified people were living in Alexander's household: 1 male age 16-26 2 females age 0-10 1 female age 16-26
Alexander housed 15 servants: 4 males and 2 females age 0-16 1 male and 5 females age 16-26 1 male and 2 females age 26-45 Alexander apparently moved from Georgia to Key Largo and acquired much land.
Alexander Speer wrote a letter to Governor John Taylor regarding Speer's report to the South Carolina Legisture about the state's claims against the United States arising from the Revolutionary War. Governor Miller wrote to President Andrew Jackson concerning South Carolina's Revolutionary War claims and to introduce Alexander Speer. Alexander Speer's letter to President Jackson refers to his arrival in Washington, the letter of introduction from Governor Miller, and the subject of Revolutionary War claims.
This letter was mailed to Alexander Speer at Church Hill, Abbeville, South Carolina. Alexander's letter to the South Carolina Legislature covers his recent efforts in Washington, DC on behalf of the State's claims from the Revoluntionary War. In the 29 Sep 1830 letter, Alexander Speer reports to Governor Miller on his recent efforts in Washington and resignes his position as Agent of South Carolina since he is a canidate for the upcoming Legislature session. The unsigned letter in the Andrea Collection says the Alexander Speer "was a man of remarkable elequence, which he has transmitted to his grandson, Emory Speer".
