Notes
a. Note:   ) or Feeny, N. Ireland. Believe John with his family imigrated to America circa 1760. UNCONFIRMED - The origin of this individual has been handed down through the various STRAIN collections. I believe it originated with the work of Adah Stewart. The source of her information has never been recorded. Some of the POSSIBILITIES that need to be researched are:---JOHN may have been born to one of the various STRAIN families in Hanover Twp., Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania.--- .JOHN may have been the brother of one of the STRAINs in Hanover Twp., Lancaster Co.,Pennsylvania. ---JOHN may be related to the RIPPY or GILLILAND or CALDWELL families from Hanover Twp., Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania. Early surnames in this county were: 1760 HUGH RIPPY and 1764 JOHN GILLILAND. Reasoning: JOHN CALDWELL son of DAVID STRAIN son of JOHN STRAIN was nicknamed "RIPPY". SAMUEL son of JOHN named one of his children JAMES GILLILAND. !AFN: BOS2-3L
!N. IRELAND RESEARCH - In July 2005, I visited N. Ireland and did some research at the PUBLIC RECORDS OFFICE OF NORTHERN IRELAND (PRONI), Belfast. I am now pursuing the possibility JOHN STRAIN originally came from FENEY TOWNLAND, MAGHERALINOR MORIA PARISH, CO. DOWN, N. IRELAND. The reason for this new approach, is the proximity of FENEY to areas where there were many STRAIN families were concentrated in 1700-1750.
!LAND GRANT - 4 January 1763 a petition was filed to obtain a land grant. A land grant in the amount of 400 acres was issued to JOHN STRAIN. The criteria for a grant was 100 acres to the petitioner and 50 acres to each family member. Based on the family size this would account for 400 acres.
Note:   !BIOGRAPHICAL:Place of birth could be Penne (Penneburn a section of the town of Londonderry
