a. Note:   t have been unhappy with his stepfather. Tombstone inscription "A SOLDIER OF THE REVOLUTION". !WILL: Dated Dec. 5, 1840 lists his children with one exception or is it an exception? Many researchers believe Samuel's first born was named Hannah. If Thomas McCartney was born in 1783 then Hannah whose gravemarker documents the year of her birth as 1783 could not be the daughter of Samuel. Increasing evidence points to Hannah being born in Pennsylvania and whose father was named Thomas. See RIN 1191. !PENSION-Declaration of War Pension dated 07JUN1832 is on file with Harold and Galen Strain. Ref: Hist. of Chillicothe Presbytery. W4904 BLW #18206-160-55. !ADDRESS-After his first marriage, one researcher indicates Samuel lived in nr Abington,Union Co.(now Cherokee Co.) SC. After leaving SC lived in Adams Co., Ross Co., and Madison Twp., Highland Co. Ohio. !MILITARY-From Jul 1779 Rank: Private. Served with the South and North Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary War. Company under Captain Johston-Regiment Colonel Shelby. Fled South Carolina after the fall of Charles Town to the British and joined as a volunteer the NC militia under General McDowell and Colonel Grimes. Was in the Battle of Thicketty Fort (Fork?) and Eutaws. Missed the Battle of Cowpens due an assignment as a nurse to a wounded officer. Served under Colonel Washington of the Calvary, Generals Morgan and Green of the Militia. !BURIAL-Rocky Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery - located a few miles south of Greenfield, Ohio off SR753 at Rattlesnake Creek. Cemetery is in very bad disrepair. !RESIDENCE: 1780-1800+/- JOHN'S family - father of Samuel - lived in the LONG CANE SETTLEMENT which was located near the present town of Troy, SC. Recent documents indicate the possiblity Samuel's family lived nr Abingdon,Union (Cherokee) Co., SC just south of the NC border. !ROCKY SPRING CHURCH: On 6 Apr 1815, in Original Book 32, page 195, of Highland County Deed Records, Samuel STRAIN and Martha his wife conveyed to "first Presbyterian Congregation in the county of Highland" four acres and seven poles. Also see page 295 of the same book.
