Note: \tx4480\tx5040\tx5600\tx6160\tx6720\pardirnatural \f0\fs24 \cf0 Robert Harris \par Added byIn "Mecklenburg Signers" by Ray, the following appears: \par THE ROCKY RIVER HARRIS \par The Harris family of the Rocky River section of Mecklenburg County ( Now part of Cabarrus County) , according to Miss Clara C. Harris, the family historian, of Concord North Carolina, are descendants of a certain Robert Harris who married Dorothy Wiley, who had the following children: \par 1. John Harris m. (1) Grizzel Steele (2) Rebecca McBay. \par 2. William Harris m. Elizabeth Glenn \par 3. James Harris m. Mary McIlhenny \par 4. Margaret Harris m. Alexander Poer \par 5. Thomas Harris m. (1) Mary McKinney (2) Agnes \par 6. Samuel Harris m. Martha Laird \par 7. Robert Harris m. Frances Cunningham (2) Ann Harris Caldwell \par 8. Charles Harris . (1) Jane McIlhenny (2) Elizabeth (Thomson) Baker \par Miss Harris says these brothers came from Pennsylvania to Mecklenburg \par County, N.C. about 1750, all except brother William Harris, who stopped in Cecil County, Maryland, where he and his descendants remained. She is a descendant of James Harris and his wife Mary McIlhenny, through his oldest son Robert, who married Margaret Harper (b. 1737), who had a son Hezekiah Price Harris (1800-1869), whose son Richard Sadler Harris (1835-1911) had Wade Hampton Harris (1858-1935) who married Cora Springs. \par (Note: The writer regrets inability to give the chart of the family in full, \par for lack of space. This Harris was NOT, in his opinion, a Pennsylvania family, \par but just another one of the families from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, who \par came from the vicinity of Somerset County and the Pocomoke River, gradually worked their way Northward to the upper reaches of the Sasafras River, into the "Forks of the Elk" where Joseph Alexander and Alexander Ewing lived and joined those families in the trek Southward down through Virginia and into North Carolina. The traditional account relied upon by the Harris family is purely traditiion in fact, and no evidence has been found identifying the family in Pennsylvania. On page 439 of "Howe's History of the Presbyterian Church in South Carolina" an account of the lifeof Rev. John Harris, says he was born in 1725 of Welch parents, who settled on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, graduated at Princeton in 1753, and soon thereafter preached to the Churches of Vicomico and Monokin, in Somerset County, in Maryland.) \par \par According to "Harris Ancestry," NCHarris.AOL, the Robert Harris family immigrated to America abt 1725-1735. Robert is listed as a first son of Edward Harris (Herries) and Flora Douglas. \par \par Pasttimes218 on 13 Aug 2008 \par THE HARRIS HISTORY indicates Robert had 7 sons and 1 daughter as we have listed here. All immigrated to Lancaster Pennsylvania early in the 18th Century. Robert was married to Dorothy Wylie. He died "in site of land" on the trip to America and was buried in Philadelphia, Pa. His 7 sons bought land in Lancaster Pennsylvania and settled there. Around 1750 to 1755 five of Roberts sons moved to Mecklenberg County North Carolina. John, James, Robert, Charles & Samuel settled on the Rocky River. John & his family of 8 children later moved to Blount County Tennessee. The remaining sons later known as the Scotch-Irish Harrises of Mecklenberg remined in the Mecklenberg area and reared large families. \par \par Posted by: Terese Elizabeth Mitchell Date: October 28, 1999 at 04:41: \par of 21560 \par \par I am looking for Harrises that lived in Blount County, Tennessee between 1750 and 1850. I am trying to go back from my ggggrandfather John Nicholas Harris who was born in 1810 in Tennessee. He married Nancy Garner and moved to North Georgia. They had children named Mary S., Robert, Rossie Ann, M. Sophronia, Samuel Henry, and Martha Elizabeth, William Garner, Dolly Jane, John Rufus. \par John Nicholas Harris' father was William Harris born 10-9-1779 or 10-7-1776 and died 10-27-1858. He was married to Jane Tribbett (daughter of Jonathan). I was given information that his father was named John who died in Blount County about 1804. \par \par In the Harris forum posting "Old Harris History Found", by Dorothy Boyle it mentions Scotch-Irish Harrises that emigrated from County Donegal, Ireland and came first to Pennsylvannia- descendants of Robert Harris and Dorothy Wylie. There were 7 sons that settled in Lancaster. One stayed there (Thomas died at age 106), another moved to Maryland (William) and the other five -John, James, Robert, Charles, and Samuel-migrated down to North Carolina in Mecklenburg now Cabarrus County. John (born abt 1690) later moved to Blount County, TN with 8 children by 2 wives. By Rebecca McBay he had Elizabeth, Thomas, John and William. By Grizzel Steele he had James, Margaret, Jane, Robert. I am looking into John born about 1742 (in 1801 he was still living in Maysville or Maryville in Blount County. His wife's name unknown, (born about 1745) with children named William, John Baird, Matthew Handy, Robert Marklin, Joseph Gilliand, Jean, and Elizabeth. (I am especially interested in the child William (no birthdate.) \par \par The other five sons of Robert--John, James, Robert, \par Charles and Samuel--about 1750 to 1755, moved to \par Mecklenburg county, North Carolina (now Cabarrus \par County) and settled on Rocky River. \par John later moved to Blount County, Tenn., with eight \par children. \par \par One record shows Immigrated to Pa 1737 with wife and children...Lancaster. \par Died in sight of land in Philadelphia, and wife and children settled in \par Lancaster. \par \par Name given as John Robert in other records. \par Note: According to research conducted by Isaac Harris of Havana, Cuba published in 1938, this was the father of James Harris, b. 1660 in Ireland and d. abt. 1726 in Pennsylvania. This Edward Harris was of Glenmarquin and was a Ruling Elder of the Raphoe Presbyterian Church. A chart included in the book, ?Ancestors and Descendants of Robert Harris, Sr.? by Mary Harris Stratton (1967) the Harris line is carried back through the centuries and purports the Harris line to descend from most of the crowned heads of Europe, and to Charlemagne, Emperor of the West who died around 814 A.D. Kings included in this lineage are: Robert the Bruce of Scotland; David, King of Scotland; Malcolm Cannamore, King of Scotland; Alfred the Great, King of England; William the Conqueror of England; and many of the Magna Charta Barons, who at Runnemede in 1215 forced King John of England to sign that famous document which laid the foundation for parliamentary government. This lineage, as is usually the case when more than one genealogist get together, is questioned by some. The author has not researched it extensively to determine its authenticity you might do so. Some genealogists feel that this Harris line was at one time located in the Vendosime Region of France, possibly bearing the Gallic name of Heriz. Another excellent source of material on the Harris (Herries, Harries, Heriz, etc.) line is the book: ?Harris, Dunlop, Valentine, and Allied Families? by William M. Mervine, a member of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. This book was printed in 1920 and is in the Library of Congress and other libraries. It is a good study of the Harris Family and contains a great deal of documentation and historical data.
