C. around 1770-71 with his father, James Caldwell, who also served in the Revolutionary War and earned the rank of Captain. John served in the militia from Ninety-Six District with his father and brother David under the command of Colonel Robert Anderson and General Andrew Pickens. For proof of service see the South Carolina Stub Indents. John was born c. 1761 in Mecklenburg Co., N. C., and came to the Abbeville District, S.C. around 1770-71 with his father, James Caldwell; married Elizabeth Thompson and both died in Abbeville Co., S. C. where John left a will in 1816. (Copy of will in file). He was Presbyterian and a ruling Elder in his church (succeeded his father in this position), Rocky River Presbyterian Church. They had 7 children. \par He was left 200 pounds in his father's will. \par His home near Lowndesville in Abbeville County, SC was eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, but has never been formally nominated to the Register. It is quite remote and is not located withinn a listed historic district. The construction of the Richard B. Russell Dam resulted in a lake impoundment of the same name that encroached upon the Caldwell-Hutchison property but is not visible from the farmstead. The farm contains a wonderful early 19th century house that evolved into a dogtrot configuration, a well house, corncrib, blacksmith shed, log barn and some other sheds. The property is located within the grounds of McCalla State Park a facility that is presently not open to the public. Plans are to open it and interpret the farm in the future. Robert Anderson and General Andrew Pickens. For proof of his service see the South Carolina Stub Indents under James Caldwell. \par He attended and was an Elder in the Rocky River Presbyterian Church, succeeding his father in that position. He is mentioned in THE HISTORY OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN SOUTH CAROLINA BY HOWE. \par His will is dated 15 April 1812; Sealed: John Caldwell; Test: Isaac Beckwith, Peter Robinson, Geo. W. Liddle. \par "James Caldwell (1738-1804) and his family, including his son John Caldwell (1761-1816) came to Abbeville District from Mecklenburg County, North Carolina in 1772. This is from a Memorial exhibited by James Caldwell: Memorial Book, Vol. II, page 510, South Carolina Archives. \par "I believe John Caldwell . . . acquired this land and built the oldest part of the Hutchison House when he married, ca. 1784, Elizabeth Thompson, daughter of Matthew Thompson." \par "The first part of the house may have been built by Aaron Steele prior to 1700, but was more likely built by John Caldwell for his son, James, and his wife, or by James himself ca.1800.(p. 1) \par "The Caldwells first appear in this area in the 1790 census. John Caldwell (1761-1816) is listed in the vicinity of the Ridge neighborhood near the Savannah River. It is likely that Caldwell built his home southwest of the Caldwell-Hutchison Farm ca. 1784 when he married. Aaron and James Steele are listed in the 1790 census as living on either side of John Caldwell. Aaron Steele died in 1795, and it is likely that John Caldwell acquired this land from the estate."(p. 3) \par "In the 1810 census John Caldwell is seen living next door to his son James. In his 1816 will Caldwell left land to three of his sons. His omission of his son James, leaving him only "smith tools in addition to what he has already got," surely indicates that he had already received land. After 1830, James Caldwell disappeared from the censuses and presumably died. In 1850 Thomas F. Caldwell, James' nephew and the son of his brother William H., is found as manager of James Caldwell's farm. According to the 1850 census, the farm had 808 acres, 171 acres under cultivation and 637 acres in woodland, pasture and idle fields. The value of the plantation was $4,640. The farm had $175 worth of tools and implements and $570 worth of livestock.(p. 3) \par Change Date: 20 NOV 2001 \par \par \par \par \par Father: James CALDWELL b: ABT 1738 in Probably In County Donegal,Ireland \par Mother: Elizabeth HARRIS \par \par \par \par Marriage 1 Elizabeth THOMPSON b: ABT 1763 in Pb.Augusta Co., VA \par Married: ABT 1784 in Abbeville Co., S.C. \par Children \par Isabella CALDWELL b: 4 JAN 1776 \par James CALDWELL b: 1785 in Abbeyville Dist.
