a. Note:   1870 Jackson Co. IN Census June 4 Page 438 Seymour Ward 1 Household 109 Family 104 Martin Aston, 35, male, white $800 (home value) $200 (personal property value) born in Indiana Sewing Machine Agent Eliza 29 female IN Florence 9 female white IN Leslie 5 male white IN Frank 2 male white IN Jane Newby 35, female, white Servant IN
The census states Martin was a Sewing Machine Agent and I have also read where he was a school teacher.
After Martin passed away Eliza and their 4 children are living with her widowed younger brother, Ithamer C. Owens, and his kids in 1880 (Knox County Census) in Palmyra Township.
John Cougar Mellencamp, also a Seymour native and rock and roll recording artist, assisted in the foundation of the Southern Indiana Center for the Arts, located just outside the city limits.
Martin was one of my 16 great great great grandfathers.
