Notes
a. Note:   Alan was a Writer, old term for attorney. On his headstone he is listed as Dean of the Faculty of Procurators. Is buried in lair 52 of the Duncan Street Cemetery in Greenock, along with wife, and children Henrietta, Robert and Katherine. It is located at North 55 degrees, 56 minutes, and 49.95 seconds West 4 degrees, 45 minutes, 56.15 seconds North.
 He was admitted to the Faculty of Procurators in 1815 (It was incorporated in 1814), he was Dean in 1816. He was elected Town Clerk in 1826, served till the next election in September 1827, was re-elected in September 1827, served till January 1828 when he resigned. His business partner was John Muir. John Muir's son, Crawfurd replaced him as Town Clerk.
 There are two entries in the LDS IGI web site for their marriage, one for December 21 in Greenock and a second for December 24 in Inveraray and Glenaray in Argyll, this is why we have the Harriet Ross born October 25 and baptized November 1, 1785, in Inveraray and Glenaray, as his spouse.
b. Note:   I am not sure of his birth date or where he was born.
c. Note:   Picture is of headstone in Duncan Street Cemetery. The inscription reads: To the memory of Henrietta Ross wife of Allan Swan Writer who died Jan1819 Allen Swan Dean of faculty died March 1839.
 The newspaper Greenock Advirtor of March 8, 1839 reads yesterday at noon. Mr Allan Swan, writer. Friends ? accept this intimation.

d. Note:   The IGI from the LDS website has two marriage dates, December 21, 1811 in Greenock, then a second on December 24, 1811 in Inveraray and Glenaray, perhaps her home town.
