Note: Graduated from University of Glasgow in 1883 with a Master of Arts with Second Class Honors in Classics (Greek & Latin) and a Bachelor of Laws.Went into practice with older brother Alexander as a notary under the name A & C Swan Notaries in Greenock. In 1887 immigrated to Canada with two younger brothers, Henry Ross Swan and Graham Brymner Swan. Worked for two years for Canadan Pacific Railroad, then for a law firm for two years then moved to San Francisco California with the Southern Pacific Railroad.
