Page:   In the Wainscott family stories were around that May Bell Hughes also know as Mamie, was married before she married Walter C. Wainscott and that she had a child that died early in life. Her first husband also is reported to have died in the great earthquake of California. Here are some facts of this story: ( She married a Henry S. Cotter age 24 she age 19, on September the 27th, 1906 at the Barton County Courthouse by the Probate Judge. Copy of License on file. Pg. 73 of court Marriage License record. (May Bell Cotter filed for a divorce on April 15th 1909 from Henry Cotter. The original transcript of the divorce is missing from the file. However, in the Appearance Docket J. ,page 182, is a index of the divorce and the dates of all court actions. The final decree was granted on June 1, 1909 The bill of $6.60 was paid by Mrs. P. D. Hughes . This removes the possibility of Henry dying in the California earthquake, in fact the San Francisco earthquake was in April 1906, months before they were married. As to the possibility of a child, In the court records of births dated 11-26-1910 a birth is recorded for a Wainscott child born to Mamie B. Hughes age 23 and Wainscott age 32 who works for the railroad. This child matches the date of birth of Rita Wainscott. Point of interest is the child in the records is shown as a male, this could be a clerk error or there was a male child? Also shown is the fact that this was the second child born to Mamie. This information leads one to believe she had a child from her first marriage. In the census for 1910 Hoisington, Barton Co. Kansas, Mamie and Walter C. Wainscott are shown living with Palestine Hughes; she as daughter and he as son in law. No children are shown in the census as the date of Census is April 18th 1910 and the birth record of the Wainscott , first child LaRita is November 26th 1910. It also points to the story that the child of the Henry Cotter marriage died young as reported as she was not on the census record of April 1910. Henry Cotter is also missing from the 1910 census for Hoisington, he may have worked for the railroad and left the area.
