Note: She died at the age of 92. She was a member of a pioneer Dallas County Family. She was the widow of W. O. Connor, an early President of Republic National Bank. She died Saturday at home, 4569 Bordeaux. She was born January 21, 1862 in Grimes County on a plantation near Navasota. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Enoch Mays, an early Dallas County settler. The Mays farm was located on what is now the site of the new Republic National Bank Building. Mrs. Connor was educated at Bluits School in St. Louis, Mo. She was a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Cathedral. Her husband, W. O. Connor became president of Republic Nation Bank shortly after its founding and at his death in 1934 was chairman of the bank's broad of directors. Mrs. Connor is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Frank E. Austin of Dallas and two grandchildren and three great grandchildren. After W. O. Connor died, Lula Mays lived a life out of the public eye or at least few of her activities were reported in the newspapers during the 20 years she was a widow. Lula Jane Mays Connor died October 9 1954. Her death certificate is number #48916. She lived in Highland Park, Dallas County, Texas at the time of death. Her address is 4569 Bordeaux. This is a different and smaller home than the one she lived in when W. O. Connor was living. This house was built in 1938, is one story, and has 2218 SF. It has two baths, a kitchen and one fireplace. Very modest compared to the previous house that had five or six bathrooms and had enormous living space, but heir daughter Dorothy and her husband and family were living with the Connors. Their son Brevard Mays Connor lived with them from time to time, and also their nephew, Donald Brevard Gannon lived with them from time to time in the early years and had worked at the bank that was chaired by W. O. Connor. The certificate indicates that she had lived in this area 80 years. She was a white female and widowed. Her date of birth was January 21, 1862 and her age was 92 years, 8 months and 18 days. She was a retired homemaker and was born in Texas. Her father is Enoch Mays that the certificate recorded in error was born in Tennessee. Her mother's name and place of birth was unknown. She had no social security number. The informant for the death certificate information was Frank E. Austin Sr. her son-in-law. Reason for death was acute congestive heart failure for 24 hours, and she had chronic Mycotala for years. Senility was a factor. There was no autopsy performed. The period of illness was October 8, 1954 to October 9. 1954. She was attended by the doctor on the day of death, and she died at 7:30 PM on the ninth. The attending physician was W. E. Cain MD, 1028 Medical Arts, Dallas, Texas. She was buried October 11, 1954 at Hillcrest Cemetery, Dallas, Texas. The Undertaker was Sparkman- Brand, Inc. with Odell Smith signing for the funeral home. In mid July 2006, I traveled to the Hillcrest Cemetery in Dallas Texas and located six graves in the Connor family plot. Lula had a large stone cross erected after her husband's death. It is covered with several symbols and has the inscription:. "Connor- In beloved memory of my husband- I am the resurrection and the life sayth the Lord". Buried at this location is "Dorothy C. Austin-July 13, 1883-April 27-1971, Frank E. Austin (Sr.)-June 8, 1871-August 13, 1941, William Ott Connor-1862-1934- He severed his own generation by the will of God-, Lula Mays Connor-January 21 ,1862-October 9, 1954, Brevard Mays Connor-March 29. 1888-September 2, 1952, John H. Webberley-March 1, 1894-November 30, 1988." Eugene C. Connor is not buried in the Connor family plot and John H. Webberley is the husband of Dorothy Austin (II) who as of this writing is no buried in the family plot. It is unknown if she remarried or if she is still living, but there are no records that she has died in the Dallas Morning News..
