  1860 Census, St Louis, Ward 5, pg 0057, taken June 12 1860: Thomas Langan, age 35 (sic) & Ann, age 27; William, 4, b Mo; & Margaret Langan, 17, b Ireland. Thomas is a laborer. Who is Margaret? Is she Thomas' daughter by a first marriage, possibly to the Catherine Langan with whom he was written about in the 1967 Saline Co History?
  Obituary: Thomas F (sic) Langan died on Friday night, December 17 1897, at 9 pm, 79 years*, at his residence which is 7 miles southeast of Marshall. He came to the United States before he was 21 (another obit said he came in the year of his majority). He was one of the pioneer settlers of Saline Co. He was well-known and highly respected. He is survived by his wife, Ann Grace Langan & 9 children, William E; John P; Thomas H Jr; George G; Jerome V; Laura; Maggie; and Anna Langan. *if this correct, his birth year would be 1818.
  Record of deeds, Bk 70, pg 609: March 2 1892, Thomas Langan buys for $8000 from Robert & Jennie L Cam[pbell: south half of northwest quarter, southwest quarter of northeast quarter & northwest quarter of southwest quarter. All in Sec 12, T49, R 21, 160 acres more or less. SMC note: found property on plat map & drove by. There is a house on the land, which is occupied.
  Record of Deeds of Trust (Mortgage): March 2 1892, between Thomas Langan & Ann Langan, parties of the first part, from Robert Campbell Sr & Lee P Viley, parties of the second part, in consideration of debt & trust & of the sum of $1 to them by the said party of the second part, do grant & sell unto the parties of the second part the south half of the northwest quarter, the southwest quarter of the northeast quarter & the northwest quarter of the southwest quarter, S12, T49, R21.
  In trust, however, for the following purposes, whereas said Thomas Langan is justly indebted to the said Robt Campbell in the sum of $8925, evidenced by his 11 promissory notes of even date herewith: one due one year after date for sume of $450; one due 2 yrs after date for $1050; one due 3 yrs after date for sum of $1005; one due 4 yrs for sum of $915; one due 6 yrs for $870; 1 due 7 yrs for $825; 1 due 8 yrs for $780; 1 due 9 yrs for $735; 1 due 10 yrs for $690; 1 due 11 yrs for $625 -- with interest from maturity of each note at the rate of 7-1/2% per annum payable annually & if not paid annually, it shall become a principal & bear same rate. All taxes to be paid & to keep insured against fire for at least $1000. NOTE: Addendum stamps dated April 10 1897 - the 11 notes were produced & cancelled by Robert Campbell Sr; next stamp: The debt mentioned in the Deed of Trust has been fully paid & discharged. I hereby acknowledge satisfaction in full and release the property from lien & encumbrance thereon. (signed) Robert Campbell, Sr, April 10 1897.
  January 15, 1898, Mrs Ann Langan being duly sworn on her oath says that she is the widow of Thomas Langan Sr, Deceased, late of the county of Saline, who died on or about the 17th day of December, 1897 and that the estate of the deceased did not exceed the value of $475, consisting of (briefly) household goods; livestock; crops; & farm equipment. Mrs Langan prays the court to order that no letters of administration be issued on the said estate, unless on the application of creditors or other parties interested, the existence of other or further property be shown. Signed with her mark. The document is called Petition for Refusal of Administration for Insuffiency of Property.
