a. Note:   Val was an active member of South Side E & R Church, Abbott Rd., Buffalo. He was president of the church board for almost the life of the church until it merged with St. John's E & R Church in 1941 or '42. He was also an active member of Cazenovia Lodge 341,IOOF who conducted a memorial service for him. See copy of obituary in file.
 His marriage certificate listed his occupation as "checker,Penn. R R" he worked for the Hasselbeck Cheese Co. from 1905 till retirement in 1948 as warehouse superintendent.
 He was a devoted family man. Fond recollections include family gatherings, particularly at Thanksgiving ( carving a huge turkey), Christmas Eve, sitting in his favorite chair,surrounded by presents which,one by one were given out to the assembled children and grandchildren, after which grandma would serve a great buffet....One year he was pleased to give all his girls house coats and went to great lengths telling how difficult the selection had been.(In reality,he never did much shopping).
 Grandpa would rent a cottage at Evans Beach, near the shore of Lake Erie. Each family stayed a week, it was the highlight of the summer.
