Note: James may have been married before he married Rebecca Rogers, since he was 49 when he married her. Though Rebecca did a nice job putting in several Kellogg's and lots of Rogers'es in the family Bible , she could have done better in explaining who they all were. At least she got in Early or Earlissa married someone named Keeler. Was James just not sure who his sister married? Maybe. James has been found in 3 Census records, for 1820, 1830, and 1850. After those dates the Census's are not indexed enough yet to be very checkable. The 1850 gives all the names in the household, so is the most usable. It lists, James, age 54, Farmer, real estate worth 1200, born in Conn. Rebecca, age 28, female, born in Ohio. Mary A, age 4, female, born in Ohio, James A, age 2, male, born in Ohio. ( also in the houshold are Elnathan Stephens, age 27, Cooper, born in NY; Margaret, 24, F; Mary L, 5, F and Viola, 2, F) (See US Census 1850, Ohio, Huron County, Ridgefield Township, Roll M432_697, p. 31, Image 264 (Img. 24 of 88) For 1830 other than James, names are not used, only age and sex categories are listed in columns. There is one male age 30-40, it must be James (b. 1796 in Conn). For females there are one age 0-5, this must be Martha, b. 1827; one female age 5-10, I am guessing is Ann. For female age 30-40, it is Margaret, who is his second wife, and whom he married on Jan 13, 1830. The female, age 60-70, must be Lydia Kellogg, b.1768, d. 5 Oct, 1835, the mother of James. (see US Census, 1830, Ohio, Huron Co, Eldridge Township, Roll M19_133, p. 340, Image 677) The 1820 census again uses only age and sex categories. There is one male age, 16-26, it must be James, b. 1796. One male over 45 must be father James born 1768, who died Oct 12, 1822. For females, one age 10-16 would probably be the sister of James, Early or Earlissa, b, abt 1794. I am not sure who the female age 16-26 would be. It could be Ann, if she is a sister to James. Female over 45 has to be mother Lydia, b. 1768 who did not die til 1835. I have a printed plat map of James's property in Ridgefield Township in 1845. It is 50 acres in part 8 of section 4 of Ridgefield Township, Huron County. This leads me to believe that maybe James and Rebecca did not live in Republic which is in Seneca County. Perhaps Republic is where James Albert had his first home and employment, and where Will Earl was born before they moved to Willard. I found an 1860 census reference in an Ohio census index. Republic was the Post office in Scipio Township, County of Seneca. So James Albert did live in Republic as a young boy. And perhaps James and Rebecca died there, as I had earlier thought, before I found they had lived in Ridgefield, Huron Co. James had real estate, a farm worth $1,200 and personal property worth $100. (Neighbors were G.A. Hisey, wife Emma with 2 children, an artist: Harvey Burton & wife age 50, son Marshall age 14, a rate merchant. wealthiest close neighbor Evan Dorsey, farmer, age 57 with wife Julia age 36, and grown children Stephen age 23, a clerk, and Evan age 20, a farmer + Julia age 23, and a servant Adelina Crocker, age 19. ) In 1870 James and family are still in Republic, neighbors are named Witter. James is 74, Rebecca is 48, James is 22, Mary Ann is age 24. (1870 Census Ohio, Seneca, Republic, M593_1266, p. 255 2d half of p., Image 512 (Img 3 of 9 on Ancestry.com site) James Albert is also listed as just Albert, age 22 working for William Anway at Img 4 of 9 on the Ancestry census site. In the 1880 census James is not found, but Rebecca is living in Chicago Junction near James Albert and Olive. I have to conclude that he died before the 1880 census, and that Rebecca made a mistake in the family Bible so that the date is possibly 1876 or 1878 and not 1886.
