Note: NOTE: There is a major discrepancy in her birth year. Stella's tombstone records September 22, 1888 as her birth date. However, on her daughter Elaine's birth certificate, Stella's age is listed (by her) as being 25 years. Elaine's birth date is April 16, 1918, so this would make Stella's birth year 1892 (if Sept is indeed her birth month). There is also a discrepancy on her husband's birth - certificate gives age as 27 years, which would make his birth year 1890, not 1888.
Elaine's birth certificate also lists Stella's occupation as Housewife, and tells us that she was born in West Virginia. They live in Clarendon, Virginia in 1918, although Elaine was born in Washington, D.C. We also learn Stella's middle name is Mildred, which is the name of her first daughter.
Stella's birth certificate lists her name as Stella Manerva McGlothlin; birth date September 22, 1888. It is possible that Stella later changed her name. At this point in research, the person we think is her father, had a sister named Minerva, so Stella's middle name may have been Minerva.
I could not find Stella nor William B. in the 1910 Soundex for VA.
Marriage Certificate of James and Stella does nothing to help clear things up: they married on August 22, 1914 in Alexandria, VA. However, Stella did not list her parents name, and states that she was born in Patterson, N.J.!
Was she trying to hide her birth place for some reason. There is no Patterson, WVA. Both Stella and James were residing in Washington, D.C. He was a Clerk. She did not give her middle name, which she gave as Mildred on Elaine's birth certificate. she gives her age as 25, which matches her birth certificate.
perhaps check records of Alexandria Baptist church - where James Madison Broadus had been a deacon - to see if Stella was a member. She was married in Alexandria (recheck marriage certificate)
