a. Note:   H6
Note:   Elaine was most likely unaware of her ancestral connections with some of the finest early families of Virginia, as her mother died when she was very young, and the rest of that side of the family appears to have also died by then. However, Elaine's middle name of Madison, and her sister's middle name of Broadus, were clues, and were most likely given to honor their grandfather "James Madison Broadus," and the Broaddus family of Culpeper. Other ancestors include the Gaines family, the Pendletons, and other early families of Virginia, including ancestors such as Colonel James Taylor, who was the second great-grandfather of two Presidents: James Madison and Zachary Taylor. Elaine Madison Hall is the seventh great-granddaughter of Colonel Taylor by a different wife.
Elaine is also the eighth great grand niece of Edmund Pendleton, who was closely involved with the Declaration of Independence. A long stretch also links her indirectly to first President George Washington: she is the first cousin, 8X removed, of the husband of George Washington's aunt! Hard to connect to someone with no children.
Also, Elaine's second great grand uncle was John Albert Broadus, the famous Baptist preacher and orator of his day. His sermons can be found online.

Elaine's birth certificate indicates she was born at Georgetown University Hospital on April 16, 1918. This is different from what her husband believes is her birth date (which he says is April 17, 1919; Elaine may have believed this, as well). Her parents lived in Clarendon, Virginia at this time, and she had an older sister Mildred.
Elaine's mother died when she was three; her father married Linda Horseman, the sister of Edna Horseman, who was the mother of R.S. Cole, Elaine's husband! Family affair! Linda had a child with James Hall, but when he died (of suicide), Elaine and her sister were sent to Texas to live with relatives there. When Elaine returned to Arlington shortly after graduating from Baytown High School, she met Boots, Linda's nephew.

On copy of Certificate of Marriage, it states that Elaine was 18 years old (actually 19), and her residence at the time was 4314 Old Dominion Drive, Arlington, VA. It states she was born in Clarendon, VA, but we now know she was actually born across the river in Washington, D.C. Parents are listed as James D. Hall and Stella "McGlothan". **********
From a December 17, 1990 letter written by Mildred Sartin, Elaine's sister: "Charlie and I have 29 grandchildren, great-grandchildren (two are step-great grandchildren). ... I have a few memories of Elaine, as we were raised by different brothers and sisters of Daddy's after his death; when we lived near Cherrydale in the country (we called it) we had saved our coins to make a trip but when we were showing it to some company, we were standing by the floor vent and lost it all - the furnace got it. Daddy and my step-mamma took us to Niagara Falls, then to Richmond, Va when Mamma's nephew was buried [or burned]. Elaine and I made a curtain around the ______'s apple tree eating them, but Mamma knew it.
"We enjoyed sleigh riding back of the home - wore galoshes to school - don't see any here. Think Daddy called her "_________". Elaine lived with Uncle Oscar and Aunt Ellen in Baytown because their daughter Essie Mae was Elaine's age. Elaine loved pets, she had a white goose but it died. They never sent a picture of her and I didn't have any of me when I lived with different relatives in Port Neches - gave Elaine Mother's cross - had pearls on it and I took some pictures but a lot of them are gone! I spent one school vacation in Baytown, Elaine was blamed for everything that Essie Mae did wrong! We didn't have happy memories!
"I forgot - Daddy was going to take us to a Fair in Georgetown - he left us in the car to buy something to eat but when he came back Elaine and I were fussing & pulling each other's hair so he took us home, we lived in Washington, D.C. then.
"We had a kitten called Patsy but couldn't find her, we had buttered her feet before we moved, there so she would pick up our scent. Ha!
"Daddy brought us to live with our Grandma Hall (Grandpa Hall had died - she had a horse named Nellie & a buggy - Daddy came after us when he married our step-mamma.
"Elaine worried about Raymond when he was sky diving!
"She called me "Sis." Sure miss her; they came to visit us, Boots, Elaine, Raymond & _____ several times - she loved Texas!"

The 1930 Census shows Elaine living with her Uncle Oscar and Aunt Ellen on Indiana St., Houston.

Elaine spent her adult years taking care of her family as a homemaker. She loved roller coasters and going to Glen Echo Park in Washington, D.C. She encouraged her husband "Boots" to spend weekends at their country cabin in Fort Valley, VA in order to get away from Arlington Police calls. They had some happy times there visiting with friends and family.
