a. Note:
Death of Mr. George W. Watkins
Mr. George W. Watkins, who was seventy-five years old on October 27, 1906, and one of the leading farmers of Gilmer County, Georgia, died at his home, seven miles North of Ellijay, Georgia, at 3:30 o'clock Tuesday morning March 26, 1907. For some time, Mr. Watkins had been affected with heart trouble and recently had a severe attack of grippe, resulting in complications which caused his death.
Mr. George W. Watkins was one of the largest farmers in this section of the country and perhaps sold more corn than any other farmer in Gilmer County. He had lived in the County for a long time and was well known and had many friends. He was a kind, accommodating and clever man, a reliable and responsible citizen, a man of business integrity and fine business judgment and had accumulated a comfortable fortune. He was a Mason and was buried with Masonic honors at the family burial ground on his large farm on the Ellijay River in Boardtown District, near White Path, Georgia. An immense throng of Masons and other friends attended the funeral, a great many attending from Ellijay. Not only the family and friends but the people of this entire section of the country will miss George Watkins. He was a useful man and people liked him.
He leaves a wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Watkins, Three Sons, Wesley Watkins, Magdalena, New Mexico, Henry Watkins of Foyil, Indian Territory, and Harley P. Watkins of White Path, Georgia, and five daughters, Mrs. Nancy Conley of Fannin County, Georgia, Mrs. Mary Legg, of White Path Georgia, Mrs. Ida Philips, of Magdalena, New Mexico, Mrs. Martha Ledbetter, of Foyil, Indian Territory, and Mrs. Sallie Nelson, of Nelson, Georgia. He also leaves his mother, Mrs. Nancy Watkins, who lived with him, and who is now one hundred and four years old, and very active for a person of great age.
Mr. Watkins married Miss Elizabeth Cox. During the last year of his life, Mr. Watkins had visited all of his children. He had eight children, sixty-five grandchildren and forty-five great-grandchildren. Five generations of his relatives were present at his funeral. This is indeed remarkable and rarely ever occurs in a family.
To the bereaved relatives and friends of the deceased, we tender our deepest sympathy in this hour of bereavement.
