  David William Jones was born on a farm near Prairie Home, Cooper Co., MO; attended the rural schools of Cooper County until the fall of 1895; then attended the Prairie Home Institute at Prairie Home, MO, for two and one half years; then 2 years at the University of Missouri and graduated from the law department in 1899. Moved to Roosevelt Co., NM in 1907; thence to Elida; thence to Portales; thence to Lubbock, TX, served almost one year as timekeeper and material yard clerk for the AT&SF Rwy. Resigned to become Supt. of Construction for Walter H. Dennison, General railway contractor for almost three years. Then accepted a position as State Road Foreman under James A. French, State Highway Engineer; later appointed Superintendent of County and State roads for Curry, Roosevelt, DeBaca and Guadalupe counties. Jones-Hunt Memorial Association FGS notes
  Uncle Will went to New Mexico, drawn by the offer of free land, probably by the railroad ads. He got there in a year when it had rained and the grass was up to the cows bellies. He thought he'd found the perfect place and lured Uncle Claude and family, my mother and their parents to this great land.
