a. Note:   In a telephone conservation with Gladys Redmond May 15, 1997, she relates a story that she had heard as a child about her father John Henry Allen. John's real mother, Sallie Hitt, died when he was young. Charles, John's father, remarried and had more children. When John was about 14 years old his father sent him away to live with some friends by the name of Bell. Lemuel Bell became a good friend of John and taught John to read and write. John so liked Lemuel that he named one of his sons after him. Supposedly John never went back home but in the 1900 census of Pickens County, John H is listed at the home of Charles and Sarah. In the 1900 census of Marengo County, there is Bell, William H. b Nov 1842 57 yrs old married 34 years Mary b Jan 1845 55 yrs old married 34 years (5 children) Joel b Mar 1870 30 yrs old Willie S. b Feb 1879 21 yrs old There is also Bell, Lemuel B. b Nov 1874 25 yrs old Katie b Nov 1878 21 yrs old
