 Aurora Fire Department
 Original Organization
The present day Aurora Volunteer Fire Department had its start on March 21, 1889 when a group of Aurora men gathered and voted to form Aurora Hose Company Number One. Meetings were held and a constitution and by-laws were set up and approved. Aurora's first fire chief was J.P. Chapman who was unanimously elected in March 1889.
 T.C. Bellis was elected president
 D.L. Machauer, vice president
 I.A. Wright, secretary
 J.C. Work, assistant secretary
 F.M. Cauger, foreman
 A.C. Phillips, second assistant foreman
 F.L. Hart, treasurer.
On April 10, 1889, the mayor and city council confirmed the adoption of the company's by-laws and constitution and Aurora Hose Company Number One became official.
The newly-formed company immediately started looking into purchasing equipment, setting down rules and more by-laws and collecting money for their treasury. Some money was collected from the people of Aurora and firemen were fined for non-attendance of meetings in an effort to add to the treasury. A fine of 25 cents was imposed if a fireman had an unexcused absence and a 10 cent fine was imposed if a fireman was absent from practice.
To help raise the much-needed funds for equipment, a dance was held on July 24, 1889. The first fireman's ball was held January 18, 1893. The dance, a masquerade, cost 75 cents for any male wishing to dance and 25 cents for any male spectator. Ladies were admitted free.
The first fire engine was purchased in 1916, with the first pumper being bought in 1929. In 1947 a second truck was added and much other equipment has been purchased since then.

"1890 History of Hamilton County (Nebraska)"
The first brick building erected in the town [Aurora] was the Hamilton County Bank building, in 1879, followed in 1881 by A. G. Peterson's building and that of the First National Bank. The Temple Block, Republican building and the Aurora Banking Company's building, all erected within the past year, are among the finest structures in the city. A fine brick jail was built by the county *** in 1888 ***, at a cost of over $7,000, the first story being fitted with two steel cells and arranged with reception rooms and offices, the second floor being designed for a residence for the sheriff of the county. An excellent system of water-works was put in by the city in the same year, including stand-pipes, steam-pumps, together with a substantial brick building, serving as pumping-station and hose-house, *** a fire department being organized in the same year ***, consisting of hose company and hook and ladder company. Under the provisions of Chapter 14 of the compiled statutes Aurora became a city of the second class in 1886.
