Note: Samuel came to Cherokee County, Kansas with his parents at age 6. They crossed the Mississippi River on a steamboat. Samuel graduated from the Pittsburg Mining School in Pittsburg, KS, then worked as a mining engineer in the local coal mines. He also homesteaded 60 acres in Ross Township, two miles west of Beulah. He died on his home farm.
After her mother died, Naomi, still a minor, lived with relatives and supposedly for a time with her Uncle Zachery Hadlock in Cherokee Co, KS. He lived close to the Cunningham homestead and it was probably how Naomi and Samuel met. After Samuel died, she married Ellsworth Laird and they lived in McCune, KS until his death in 1940. She then moved to Girard (we lived near her for a while). She removed to Oakland, CA in 1950 and lived with her oldest daughter Lois until her death. He body was returned to Girard and buried next to her first husband Samuel Cunningham, in the Cherokee Cemetery in Crawford county.
