a. Note:   William was born on the home farm near Monmouth, Kansas, a small town about 14 miles south of Girard. He farmed in this area all his life. Later in life when he was semi retired, he leased a small farm about half a mile east of Girard on the Pittsburg Highway. There he raised a few pigs and beef cattle they butchered for their own use, and like most farmers, lots of chickens, both layers and fryers, as well as a large garden. Much of my early chldhood was spent on this farm. He owned a team of work horses, actually one mule named Beck and a mare named Mary. He used this team for extra income in the spring to plow family gardens in the area, often taking grandsons Charles and Lloyd Cunningham with him. His mule became semi-famous in the area for winning the annual mule race at the county fair several times, often ridden by his oldest granddaughter Helen Sale. William and Della died six months apart and both are buried in the Myers Cemetery in Girard.
