Note: om his mother. He was redfaced too. He was 6 ' tall, but because of a broken back injury, he was quite stooped. He worked for the county as a driver of a dump-truck, hauling clay for the county roads. He did at one time own a garage, I have heard.
Grandpa never had much to say. He liked to sit on the front porch and chew tobacco. He didn't go to church, I never knew him to. He didn't swim, but he liked to fish. He was born and raised in Altoona too. He did go to Canada to work one year or so.I have heard family rumor that he had a child by a woman in Canada. I think it was during the depression. Granny and Grandpa also lived in Miami for a little while when their daughters Eileen and Billie were very young, abt, 1918-1920. I don't know why they went there, except that Granny's grandfather Jasper Dykes lived down there for a while in early 1900's but he died in 1913 in Lake Co.
Grandpa was the only son of W. G. and Georgia Atkinson Shores. He died in 1960 from drowning. He had taken his G Grandson , Al White, 4years old with him fishing. He had an old row boat . When they didn't return by early evening, the sheriff sent boats out to look for them. They found the boat with little Al in it all alone, and Grandpa floating nearby. It was after dark. Little Al said Grandpa stood up to Pee and fell in. We think he may have had a heart attack, because the undertaker said there wasn't much water in his lungs. Grandpa never learned to swim.
