Rutha Mae was named for her grandmother Robertson, Ruth, and an aunt, Abbigale. She had long black hair which she always wore up in a bun at the back of her head. She would plait it at night. Her hair was not as grey when she died as mine was at 35. She was about 5 foot 8 inches tall and a bit on the heavy side. She had brown eyes and was left handed.
She tried to teach Mable to crochet but it was just backward to Mable and she never learned.
She always made the best peach cobbler, and we would make Mother very mad when we would say"It's good, but not as good as Mamo's". I think she quit making them for a good while. L.D.'s daughter Sandra went out there with us a few times and she thought the fried pies were the best. She was a good cook as long as Grandad was living but after that she didn't keep in practice and started slipping.
She had to have cataracts removed from her eyes in about 1948. She had them removed from both at the same time, as she didn't think she would want to go back again. At that time you had to wear patches on the eye for about two weeks,so they stayed with us and we all helped lead her around.
In 1950-51 she found out she had diabetes and Grandad had to give her insulin shots, but he soon died and she had to learn to give them herself. She did not watch her diet and developed problems she might not have otherwise had.
