He taught school in Cumberland County and then came to Chanceford Township to read medicine with Dr. Benjamin F. Porter, husband of his sister Sarah Jane. He attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia from 1863 - 1865 and was graduated in March 1865. He married Amelia A.M. Boyer in October 1865. The 32-year-old then opened his own practice, first in East Prospect and then Springvale (both in York County). He was a school director and was a member of the Pennsylvania Legislature, 1883-84. He was also a Mason. Dr. Bigler passed away on 1 April 1915 of "senile debility" at his home in Dallastown.
