Notes
a. Note:   d in 1864 Aug 10th, then their daughter Nancy is missing on the 1870 Cesus and presumed to be dead. Her father and mother died in that same time period, and her siblings filed to reclaim the homestead that they had been livng on. (they won thier claim in 1875).* Added to that was the Civil War raging in their backyard. It must have been too much for Elizabeth and she is missing in the 1870 Panola County Census. A Mary Elliott has taken her place, age 40, born in TN as head of the intact family.
She reappears in 1884 to claim 1280 acres as Ann Elliott that she swears is owed to her as the widow of James.. On the original document. filed there is a Horace McDaniel and J.M Morris in October of 1884 as witnesses. The judge of the county is T.E. Boone. A Certificate of Board of Veterans dated January 1885 say that her claim is granted to the "Veterans who were engaged in the struggle of Texas Independence prior to and at the battle of San Jacinto" She picked out a survey to only find out it was taken but died before she could get another one. Perhaps the State of Texas still owes the Elliott Family 1280 acres. In 1898 the Supreme Court declared there was no more vacant land.
A later document in January 1892 by L.H. Adams, Notary Public and Land Agent for Panola County is witnessed by a Mrs. Fannie Metz. It says Logansport. LA by the date. It is for quarterly pensions for Texas Army Veterans for January, February and March #29745 and 20746. This pension ceased in 1893. In the Wren Family database she is listed as having died in 1865 and buried at Yarnell but these later documents prove that she was not dead, only missing for a period of time.
*Just guessing: Elizabeth's father probably gave her the homestead figuring that her family would honor it. The information handed down to me was that James and Elizabeth had paid taxes on it until the time she lost it to to her brothers. Marshall and Ardenia filed a deed in 1873. I'm sure it must have read et. al. In 1873 tha case was settled in court and Demosthenes got $10 in hand.
Note:   Elizabeth was 20 when she married James. All seemed to be going well until 1864. James die
