Note: He was a tailor who was believed to be from Bideford on the Torridge River in Devonshire, England. Sailed from London 9 Mar 1632 aboard the "Francis and James" as part of the Gov. Edward Winslow party, arriving in Plymouth 9 Mar 1632. Was made Freeman in Plymouth 1 Mar 1642. Received six acres in Wobery Plain, five acres in the South Meadow and three parcels for his home lot at Willingsly Brook. He removed to Eastham (then called Nauset) in 1644/45 where he was one of the first settlers. He removed to Saconnet, RI in 1667, the to Piscataway, NJ about 1670. Was the Constable in Eastham in 1646, Surveyor of Highways in 1649 and Magistrate in Piscataway in 1673. His death was due to exposure after he had wandered six or seven miles from his house into the woods. His Will was dated 16 Jul 1689, proved 23 Jun 1697. He was buried in the Smalley Family Buriel Plot, Piscataway, Middlesex, NJ. Note: Some records indicate John Smalley and Edward Smalley, who settled in Maine, were brothers, sons of Edward Smalley. This has not been proven, but if not, they were probably related, as several of the Maine Smalley's moved to Eastham and Truro, MA, where John Smalley was living.
