a. Note:   No proof has been found that this Edward was the father of Edward and John Smalley. Both were born in Bideford, Devon, England and came to America about the same time. Edward settled in Maine before removing to Cape Cod, MA where he and members of his family settled in Eastham and Truro. From Massachusetts, they went to Connecticut, then Vermont and finally Mount Auburn, IA. John settled in Plymouth, MA before removing to Rhode Island for a brief period, then to Piscataway, New Jersey. He and his descendants lived several generations in Piscataway and the the Passaic Valley in New Jersey before removing to Ohio, most of them to Adams County.
