Note: Frederick Batzner Sr. came from Hallwangen in Wurtemburg, Germany. Wurtemburg is a "state" in southwestern Germany east of the Rhine River. It's mostly hilly and includes the Schwarzwald or Black Forest. Hallwangen is a little town located a few miles east of the city of Freudenstadt. There are no Hallwangen records available in this country. In 1837, Frederick took his family to the seaport Bremen, and sailed to America on the ship S.S. Chipola. They landed at Philadelphia on July 3, together with the family of Johannes Geo Batzner. They then traveled to Franklin County Indiana, arriving in September. His occupation on the ship's list was weaver. Johannes was a baker. On December 8, 1837, Frederick Batzner purchased 40 acres from Benjamin Woodworth and his wife Mary of Hamilton County, Ohio. He paid $375.00. It was the SW of the SE section 5 of Township 10 N, Range 13 E, in Butler Township of Franklin County, Indiana, near St. Mary's between St. Peter's and Oldenburg. That puts it about 9 miles West of the Schenkel property near the Whitewater River. Two years later, Frederick Batzner sold this property to John Adam Brosie. On April 26, 2838, Frederick Batzner took out his first papers to become an American Citizen. He stated that he was born in Wurtemburg in Germany in 1794, wand was 44 years old. He said he left Wurtemburg in April of 1837, and came to Franklin County in August 1837. On 28 August of 1843, he finalized his papers with two witnesses to his residence, character, etc., renounced allegiance and fidelity to Wilhelm, Kind of Wurtemburg, and became an American citizen. In 1845, Frederick was working on the Canal Basin in Brookville, the county seat of Franklin County. He was paid $30.00 for hauling building materials. In the Census of 1840, he had 10 people living in his home, but in the Census of 1850, he seems to disappear and several of his children are living with other families. On November 24, 1851, he purchased Lot 2D from David Price in Brookville. He paid $50.00. This same lot was sold to his granddaughter Josephine Batzner Bennett or Benntle on 10 December 1863. It is possible Frederick was dead then, but not proven. Frederick's wife Anna Marie died January 27, 1857, and was buried in the Old Cemetery near downtown Brookville. Also buried there before 1860, was daughter Christena, the wife of Nicholas Krehmer. The Census of 1860 shows Frederick Batzner, age 63, living with his oldest son Michael Batzner and his 2nd wife, Margaret Metzger. Also living in the same house was Frederick's youngest daughter Rosan, age 18. Michael Batzner makes off with the town treasury and flees to Canada in 1862. Rosan marries Raphael Gall January 1, 1861. There is no death record, obituary, or probate record for Frederick Batzner, Sr. In the Civil War service records there is a Frederick Batzner who enlisted as a private on October 30, 1862. Company C, 54th Infantry Regiment Indiana. No pension for this person is recorded, so at this time it is not known if this was Frederick Sr., or Jr. Fred Sr. would have been 65 years old at the time of enlisting, too old by todays standards.
