Note: Michael said in 1844: "Embarked at Bremen (Ger.) arrived in Philadelphia came to Franklin Co. September 1837". Source: Larry Bradfield There is a record of a M. Batsner (or Batener) in the US Mexican War Roll of Honor--US Casualties of the battles of Chapultepec and City of Mexico, September 13-14 1847. Second division, commanded by Brig. Gen. Twiggs. Actions at Chapultepc and the Garita de Belen on the 13th, and in the city of Mexico on the 14th and 15th of September 1847. Mounted Rifles: Wounded: Pvt. M. Batsner or Batener, Co. H, severely. Michael married Margaret Metzger in 1849. Recorded in the Franklin County marriage records. In the 1850 census Michael's occupation was Constable. He was married to Margaret Metzger and had Josephine and William listed as his children. Josephine is listed as age 9. This her birthdate before the actual marriage of Michael & Margaret. Michael became a real estate magnate. In the 1860 Census he was listed as the county treasurer, and his property value was listed at $6500. Personal property was listed as $2000. In the summer of 1862 he took the treasury, some $30,000, and fled to Ontario Canada where he died in 1873. Franklin County seized his various properties and sold them for $25,888 to recover some of the loss. This article was found in the LDS files from Franklin Co., Indiana. Transcribed and emailed to me by Cindy Kuhn: "Michael Batzner was another Franklin recruit in the Mexican War and after his return took an active part in politcs. He was eleted sheriff twice and later filled the office of County Treasurer. Before the expiration of his term he absconded with thirty thousand dollars of the county's money and fled to Canada." In the Ontario Canada Sessional/Parliamentary papers of 32 Victoria 1868-69, it lists J M Batzner as given a license for a tavern in the town of Bothwell for the amount of $10.00 In the 1871 Census of Ontario Canada, in the Township of Bothwell, it shows a John Batzner, age 49. His origin is German, from the United States. Occupation: Hotel Keeper. Also living in the house was Margaret, age 43, Mary, age 19, Phillipena, age 15, Donnie, age 12, and Ida, age 9. All children but Ida are listed as born in the US. From the Franklin County Democrat of Thursday, June 13, 1873: "Michael Batzner, who ran away with the contents of the Franklin County treasury in 1862, died on Monday at Boswall in Ontario Canada." All Census record Michael's birthdate as October of 1822-23. From the Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid or OCFA~~ surname search: 7 matches of the name of BATZNER. Bill Bennett, a generous volunteer, answered a query and looked up the transcripts that contains death dates. J M Batzner, located at the West Bothwll Cemetery the county of Ontario, township of Kent: Stone says: John M. Batzner, died June 16, 1873, age 50 years, 7 months and 25 days.
