Note: Archibald Murphy, Sr. came from Country Antrim, Ireland and his wife Mary from Village Topsham in Devon County, England. It is reported that Archibald left Ireland at age 28 (1796) and he and his brother (name unknown) served as crewhands to earn their passage. He was a sailor for three (3) years and then spent eighteen (18) months aboard a ship of war (possibly American) and was discharged at Philadelphia, PA. Mary came to Philadelphia with her parents, James & Eliza Golson in 1785. (Golson was the original spelling given for Mary's family. It was reported on the death certificate of Archibald Murphy, Jr. by his son Oliver T. Murphy, that Archibald Jr.'s mother's maiden name was "GoldsSmith", but the general feeling is that this was in error. It was then reported by Virginia C. Smith that her husband had a relative named John Middleton Test who married one of Mary's younger sisters, Margaret (Eliza) Goldson). Archibald & Mary were married in Philadelphia on August 29, 1805. That same year Archibald and Mary came to Peters Township, Washington County, PA and lived all of their days in Washington County, PA. They they were the parents of twelve (12) children. Nothing much is known about their oldest son John or John's family but Archibald, Jr. related to his grandson, Archie, that he had a brother that lived to be 98 years old. John is buried in the Peters Township Baptist Church in Finleyville, PA. It is also believed that Archibald & Mary's oldest child was a girl named "Arthula", but this has not yet been confirmed. Archibald, Sr. died on April 22, 1845 (Age 77) and is buried at the Mingo Presbyterian Church Cemetry near Finleyville, PA and his gravestone still exists. Two gravestones next to Archibald identify a Hugh Barckley, died May 22, 1830 and Elizabeth, wife of Hugh died Sept 20, 1840 in the ?? year of her age. It is possible that this Elizabeth could have been a sister Archibald, Sr. Mary died in 1879 (Age 97) but it is not known where she is buried although she could be buried next to Archibald and there is no gravestone. There is obviously a lot of additional research to be done on the history of Archibald Murphy, Sr., Mary, and their immediate family! By: Frank B. Murphy Mar 10, 1998 Revised: May 20, 2000
