a. Note:   On August 19, 1861 in Fort Scott, Kansas, Thomas, at age 47, enrolled as a Private in Company A of the 6th Regiment, Kansas Infantry, Union Army. He served 6 months and was mustered out at Camp Dietzler, Kansas on March 7, 1862. His sons William, John and George also enlisted at that time.
  Letter from War Department, Adjutant General's Office, Washington, Nov. 23, 1886:
 "Respectfully returned to the Commisioner of Pensions. Thomas Clark, age 47, a private of Company A, 6 Regiment Kansas Inf., Volunteers, was enrolled on the 19 day of Aug., 1861, at Fort Scott, Kansas, 3 yrs, and is reported: on roll from enrollnent to Dec. 31, '61, present, Jany & Feby, '62, not on file: mustered out with Co., March 7, '62, at Camp Dietzler, Kansas, under G. O. No. 9, Dept. of Kansas, 1862. No returns on file. Co Returns and Books of Organization (indlucing Regt. Hosp. Records) are not on file. The Records of this Office furnish no evidence of alleged disability. Signed R.C. Drum, Assistant Adjutant General."
  Based on the above letter and 1850 U.S. Census records Thomas was born about 1815 in Virginia.
