a. Note:   s first a Private, then a Sergeant in the Revolutionary War and was made a Major in the Whiskey Rebellion. (1) He and his son Jacob bought a mill in Kingston towards the close of the century. (2)
  During the War of 1812 they did a heavy business. The roads were bad and they could not cart grain and flour fast enough; so they went to the Delaware and procured Durham boats and, placing them in the river, ran them from one dam to another and reshipped their freight, passing it into another boat over the breast of each dam, till they came to the Raritan. (2) (Completion of the Delaware and Raritan canal in the 1830s would open more efficient transportion to major markets.) Aside from his farm and mill, he also owned a part interest in a tavern and a distillery. (1)
