Spring St., Mishawaka, St. Joseph Co., IN ___________________________________________________________ From the Mishawaka Public Library Clipping File; South Bend Tribune, Thursday, March 9, 1922: WILLARD ALDRICH, ALLEGED ATHEIST REQUESTS PECULIAR BURIAL IN 1882 Mr. Feiten, whose picture can be seen at the side of the casket he built, came to Mishawaka from Germany in 1853 and learned the trade of a cabinetmaker. In 1865 he became an undertaker at 205 North Main Street, now the Salvation army barracks. He was burned out in the fire of 1872, but re-engaged in the business and became the best known undertaker of his time in the county. Next door south was the tailor shop of Mr. Hartwick, the father of Rose Hartwick Thorpee, the writer of the famous "Curfew Must Not Ring Tonight." Mr. Feiten continued in the business until 1901 when his son succeeded him in the business. His son passing away Mr. Feiten sold the business March 6, 1906 to J. V. Schmitt. Later it went into the hands of Hobart & Jones and then was sold to Joseph Thallman, who sold to Frank E. Coats* in 1919. Mr. Coats now operates the business established in 1865 at Race and Third streets, but will move soon to the old J[ames] A. Roper home on Lincoln Way East, having purchased the property in 1921. Mr. Feiten was 82 years old on Feb. 3 this year and makes his home with his daughter, Mrs. C. J. Lenhard, 303 East Third street. *Frank Earl Coats, was born 10 Nov 1885 in Illinois. He lived at 514 N. Campbell St., Macomb City, Illinois in 1910; at 123 S. Race St., Mishawaka, Indiana in 1920; and at 216 Lincoln Way West, Mishawaka, in 1930.
