Notes
a. Note:   Born on Sept 1,1823 in Steuven Germany. Michael's parents died when he was a small child. We know nothing about his childhood except he had an older brother possibly named Christopher Fred Ferch and a half-brother named August Neuman. We know nothing of his upbringing or where he lived as a child.
After he served his required 2 years in the German Army. He immigrated to America arriving May 15,1852 at the Port of New York on the ship named Indian Ocean. He worked for a period of time in Rochester, NY.
He began his migration westward spending time in Indianapolis,IN and Cedar Falls, IA; finally coming to Waterville,MN. in 1854. In 1856 he married Frantiska [Frances] Dusbabek in Waterville. They were among the first families to settle there. Frantiska's father, Paul Dusbabek, and his family were among the first families of Waterville, MN too. In fact there are still relatives of our Dusbabek family residing in this area in 2000. These first families in Waterville did much of the pioneering work. Michael was like so many men in the 1800's; a farmer.
Michael became a Naturalized citizen of the USA in McLean County, Illinois 6 Apr 1875.
All 12 of the Ferch children were born in Waterville, Le Sueur County,MN. Their first born, John died in infancy. Their daughter, Susan died fron consumption [TB] at the age of 13.
Michael's brother came to America several years befor Michael and Michael lost all touch with him. Soon after Michael was settled in Waterville he encouraged his cousins; Julius , August, and Gottlieb Ferch and his half- brother August Neuman to come to Minnesota.
January of 1882 Michael sold his land in Waterville to Alexander Marple for $250.00 and moved his family and settled near Odessa in Big Stone Co.,MN. While Big Stone became a county in1862 it did not become a real functioning county until about 1877 and there were only about 85 families in the whole county at that time. So once more the Michael Ferch family became pioneers. He purchased 35 acres of land near Odessa. There had been an Indian outbreak in western Minnesota in the early 1870's and this led to the slower development of this area; Big Stone County.
Michael Ferch continued to buy land in Big Stone Co., by 1892 he owned 272 acres. Wheat, corn, soybeans and alfalfa were raised. The family also raised cattle.
He joined the Evangelical congregation in Waterville shortly after he married Frantiska. At the outbreak of the religious dispute (circa 1860's ?) he became a faithful member of the United Evangelical Church which was Lutheran. In 1897 he and his family were charter members in Odessa of the Salem United Evangelical Church of the Northwestern Conference of Odessa Missions. Until 1901 all the services were said in German. It wasn't until 1913 that all services were said in English. The Odessa church was Methodist.
Michael died on Oct 26 1899 and was buried in the Ferch family plot in Odessa at the Odessa Church.
