MARR-DEATH:: Pauline was born Elizabeth Pauline Martin on 4 August 1905 in Catawissa, PA, the third child of Stephen and Emma Madora (Fetterman). At a young age, someone mispronounced her name, and Dora immediately began to call her Pauline. She always signed her name as E. Pauline most of her life. Pauline was baptised on 4 September 1905 at St. Matthews E. L. Church in Catawissa, PA. At the time of her birth, President was Theodore Roosevelt. The US population was 83,822,000. They returned to PA only to return to CA in 1913, settling in a home on 29th Street in Sacramento. On one of these trips from the east coast, the children were ill and a very nice lady helped Emma care for them on the crowded train. She was the film and stage actress, Ethel Barrymore. Pauline grew up in Sacramento attending Newton Booth Grammer School, and up the the 8th grade at Girls High School and then to Sacramento High School. She worked at Cosgroves Store and Fountain, serving ice cream and root beer to youths gathering on Friday nights, etc. She remembers groups of singers singing "barber shop" on street corners. She bought and owned a Cord automobile before her marriage. Pauline belonged to the First Christian Church for 20 years or so, also taught Sunday School. She was a memeber of the Rebeccas (Odd Fellows) and worked at the Great Western Power Co., on "K" Street, and later at California Western State Life Insurance on 10th & "Y" until their oldest daughter was born in 1933.
