Note: FHH Notes: 1994>> ____ b-Jan 22 1935 (see my notes,"I Remember When") Abo Missouri was on the east side of Laclede County "Osage,Township and was a township beginning 1891. It was a famous fishing spot in its day and was named by Jesse Bollinger who operated a mill at the place. The mill was a post office, mill and grocery store in one building. Abo MO was located a little west of Cross Roads Church and Cemetery. on the banks of the Gasconade River and as the crow flies, about 12 or so miles east of Lebanon. The name Abo was still on the 1950 state road map, but not on a current map. Abo was 4 miles NE of Dry Nob, There was also a post office in Dry Nob.* From Missouri Manual 1901-1902, p. 381-map of western states Rand McNally & Co 1911. In the 1960's Marjorie & I visited the old Abo area. There were 4 or 5 small cabins there; looked like a fishing lodge owned it. In the 1990's we revisited the area and there was a large brick house there sitting next to the river. The owner let us look around and the only thing left of Abo was the foundation of the mill. Marjorie & I moved to Lowell Arkansas on July 07 1993. I Remember When By Francis Henry Hicks Started 1996>end of life. I remember my first car, at age 16, a 1936 Ford 4 door rag-top. At the time, I worked for a body shop; boy did that car shine, but I fixed it up too good. You see, my father was a used car dealer; he was an Indian giver and he sold it. He then GAVE me a 1936 Oldsmobile coupe. I had it until I got married at 17, "too young". I remember my father as a hard working man and my mother a short 5ft. 4", plump, not fat, little lady that loved her kids and family. Anna Mae, the oldest, Carl Gene, the youngest and then there was ME, always getting in trouble some way or another. I remember when I went off to the Marine Corps during the Korean war in 1953, my mother told me later that dad cried like a baby; he never was much for showing his love for you, but he loved you anyway. After I was divorced from my first wife, I moved to and worked in Springfield Mo., for a bit, then moved to Iowa and met my true love, married her and loved her for the rest of my life. As for me, I remember being a freckle faced kid 14 or 15 years old that loved music, played a guitar and sang and lived at home with mom, dad, Anna Mae and Carl; my sister and brother. My sister and I got along together, but Carl and I were always at it, he even pulled a knife on me one time. I took it from him and threw it away. But all in all, we all three loved each other. My brother and I had the best relationship together until he died (see my Ancestry file for dates). I remember my great grandfather, Miles Evans Brasher, a German man from Kentucky and the first Minister at the Cross Roads Baptist Church & Cemetery. I think he lived with his daughter, my grandmother in between marriages; he was married 5 times. He was a preacher and he chewed tobacco and out lived the first 4 wives and died in 1948. I remember my grandfather that stood about 5 6" with a slender build, maybe 140 lb. soaking wet, Rufus Hicks. He always had 2 or 3 eggs, bacon or fatback (a fat piece of meet with no red meat on it) with biscuits and milk gravy every morning of his life. You know, I never did figure out how he stayed as thin as he did. My Grandfather loved to ride and be around horses. He always had from one to three of them. I would work for granddad at harvest time cutting hay or picking corn, we did it by hand in those days. I remember grandmother Hicks, a tall German lady bent over a little with age and love in her heart & loved to cook. I think because she did a lot of it, she had to love it as much of it as she did. Sunday dinner at grandmothers was like an old church social. All of the family, kids by the bunch, would be at grandmothers house after church. All of the family lived less than 1 mile apart when I was growing up; there was the red house, (Hermans house), then the green house, (grandfathers house), the blue house, (Omers house), my dad, then the white house, (Herbert & Dorothys house), and Lorenes house was white also in the 40s. Roy was the only one that did not live close to the rest; he had a farm and lived out in the county. Herbert did move to Washington state one time. When I finely grew up and got married, I lived in Lorenes white house for a time (rent was $15.00 a mounth). The Hicks family lived close together, but as time passed, they lived further apart. Some went to Washington state, Iowa and some were back and forth. I remember my great aunt Isophenia, my grandfathers sister, and my great grandmother, Elvira, my grandfathers mother, living together from 1914 until her death in 1953. I remember Frank Elam, Lorenes husband. He loved to hunt and fish. He would go coon hunting, skin the coon for the hide, then give the carcus to my aunt Phenia to cook. By the way, she lived in a green house also. I would go to the store for her on my bicycle and get food and tobacco for her. The tobacco was for great grandmothers corn cob pipe that she smoked as long as she lived which was 97 years. It was told she was born in 1853, actually she was born in 1856. It was also told that she lived with her uncle, J. P. OBannon, a banker in Buffalo MO.. I looked and had a lady in Buffalo that researched the OBannon family and found no data confirming that Elvira lived with her uncle (James Procter OBannon),. On the 1870 census, Dallas County, both her father and mother were living and she was 13 years old and on the 1880 census she was 23 and would be 24 in Apr.1880. Only her mother was living at this time. I was married 2 times, first to Evelyn Williams and had one (1) son James David Hicks. We married when I was 17 and it was too young to be married. It ended in divorce. Then I met my true LOVE, Marjorie Ann Fock. She had 3 sons whose father was dead. Then Marge and I had 1 son, Francis Omer Hicks "named after my father and my self". I remember when all the boys but one went away and never spoke to mom & I again. It broke our hearts. Mom and I think the older 3 boys are jealous of Francis O.. I always tried to be fair to all my sons. Norman and his 1st wife had a little girl whos name was Destiny Danielle; she died in 2005, we will never forget her, but God gave us another little girl to love named Faith. We have other granddaughters but their parents wont let us see them and if we write to them they say we are interfering in their lives. Francis "Fritz" never forget his mom & dad and we loved him very much. He married Merilee Ann Shepard she had 3 children (like father like son) when Francis married her. On Jan 17 2007 they had a baby girl named Faith Bryca Hicks. God gave mom and I another grand-daughter to love. And I loved this little one very much but she lived in Iowa and we did not get to see her very much. We hope to see her the 1st week in Apr. 2008. Well Faith did come and see mom & I in Apr 2008 & she is growing up. I loved all of my boys and tried to be fair with all of them, but may be Francis was a little special in my eyes, but I was fair to all. Francis is from my loins & now that the other sons don't have anything to do with mom and I, it makes Francis special to mom and I. I still love all my kids & grandkids. Will here it is my birthday and I'm 74, didn't think I would make it, but I did. I will go see my maker some day, not soon I hope. Today is June 24 2009 and mom and I are getting ready for our 50th anniversary on July 10 2009. I made a garden this year, I don't know if I will have one next year but this years is doing good. I have a little story to tell you about the first tomatoes I got this year. Well mom and I were working in the garden and I said, look mom two ripe tomatoes and I picked them and had her lay them on the ground. She did and 15min. later I stepped on them and I all most cried... end of story. Well it's May 2010 and with God's help mom and I are still here by the grace of God our father in heaven. I have a garden this year and it's doing good so far. We have had so much rain this Spring I have weeds coming up in my garden and if it don't dry I may have to hoe it when wet. May doctor sid i had about 6M to live that my Heart was bad bad the next doc i see said the same thing may be ture I will not update this again except for the date every 6 months,"when i remember.
