Note: Eugene "George" Fiese had type 1 diabetes. He had an ingrown toenail that got infected and before long he had gangrene which spread to just below the knee where he had to have it amputated. He had an artificial leg and learned to drive again. He was very functional. He didn't realize he had diabetes until this happened. He died from an apparent heart attack.
