a. Note:   In the 1850 Census of Madison County, Georgia, he was a farmer. In the 1860 Census of Madison County, he was a farmer with $200 worth of real estate and $450 worth of personal estate. Alfred Sartain married Amanda Beard (see Madison Co., GA Marriage Book B, p. 48) who was a sister of Martha Beard who married his brother, Lewis Sartain. In the 1860 Census there was a Joel Hughes, b. ca. 1852 living with Alfred and Amanda. His relationship to them is unknown.
