Note: Johann Phillip Stumpf was baptized into the Lutheran faith on July 17, 1888. He was confirmed on September 28, 1903. Mary (Hubert) Stumpf also originally belonged to the Lutheran Church in Russia. She was baptized into the Lutheran Church on December 13, 1887. She was confirmed into the Lutheran Church on May 25, 1903. Phillip and Mary were married at the Lutheran Church in Warenburg, Russia where they both grew up. As newlyweds they came to the United States in 1907 along with the Hubert family. Their oldest daughter, Mary, was born on the ship on the way over to the United States. They came over to the U.S. with the Hubert family. This included Mary's parents and brothers and sisters, as well as one uncle, Jacob Hubert and family. When they first arrived in New York, some of the Huberts had to stay at Ellis Island because they had pink eye. After leaving New York, they went to the area around Green Bay and Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The Stumpfs and Huberts belonged to the Lutheran church. When Mary (Stumpf) Brown, their oldest daughter who was born at sea, needed to prove her birth, she wrote to Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church at Green Lake, Wisconsin for a record of her baptism there. Judging from the birth places of their 10 children, it appears that they moved around a lot. From Wisconsin they moved to Fresno, California, where they were living in 1909 and 1911 when Anna and Phillip, Jr. were born. By 1913 they were living at Ritzville, Washington where Henry was born. Then to Winnett, Montana, from about 1914 through 1922, where Pete, Alice, Esther, and Jim were born. In 1924 they lived at Nampa, Idaho where son Robert was born. By 1929 they were living at Riverside, California where their daughter Helen was born. Phillip Stumpf's certificate of naturalization is no. 829674 for Fergus County, Montana, found in petition volume 5, number 887. It is dated September 25, 1918. At that time he was 31 years old, and his height was listed as 5 feet 9 inches, white with medium complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. He was living at Ashley, Fergus County, Montana with his wife, Mary, age 32 and minor children, Mary, 11; Anna, 9; Phillip Jr., 7; Henry, 5; Peter, 3; and Alice, 2 months and 24 days. After coming to California in the late 1920s, the Stumpfs lived at Elsinore, California, and San Bernardino, California. Phillip worked as a leadman for the California Division of Highways, doing highway maintenance for 23 years before he retired. Phillip was 81 years old when he died. Cause of death was cardia decoupensations and bronchial pneumonia. His memorial service was conducted by Rev. Luther Schwartzkopf. Mary died at Shea Convalescent Hospital in San Bernardino, California. She was 88 years old. Phillip and Mary Stumpf are both buried at Montecito Memorial Park in San Bernardino, California.
