In "the Free State of Jones, Mississippi's Longest Civil War" written by Victoria E. Bynum on pages 72 & 73, it gives a better reason that Mathew Kilgore was killed by the Knight Gang. There was apparently revenge that prompted them to kill him. Victoria's Book, says that Matt was a Deputy Sheriff and attempted to arrest Thomas Jefferson Coleman for illegal ( and sinful) gambling. Under the guise of seeking to borrow money in order to post bond, Tom persuaded Sheriff Kilgore to take him to the home of his kinsman, Jackie Knight, who lived just across the Jones County line in Covington. When they arrived he taunted the sheriff, insisting that he could not arrest him now that they were standing outside Jones County. A violent melee followed that ended when the sheriff plunged a knife so far into Tom's neck that it severed his jugular vein. Tom then attacked Kilgore with a lady's pen knife.Tom died.
