Notes
a. Note:   The following is from "Whence Ye Came", by my sister Helen-Wilson-Hunt
Jacob Hinden, M.D., was a well known Strong City physician and civic leader. H.E. Lancaster, dentist, and Jacob Hinden, Santa Fe Railroad surgeon, opened their offices in the Old Commercial Hotel, Strong City, Kansas, in April, 1902. Jacob Hinden, M.D. was graduated at the Thirteenth Annual graduating exercise for the Kansas Medical College in Topeka, Kansas. He served his internship at the Santa Fe Hospital in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
Jacob Hinden was born 29 June 1873 in Jefferson County, Kansas. His family had immigrated to New York State from Aargau Canton, Switzerland in 1852. After the Civil War, the family moved from New York state to Jefferson County, Kansas, where Jacob was born. His interest in medicine began at an early age. He worked as a farm laborer for a few years to earn the money to go to medical school. While in college, he cleaned a doctor's office in order to have a place to sleep and operated a hearse at night for subsistence. Being a 1902 class officer, he had to borrow a suit in order to give an address at his graduating exercises on 20 March 1902.
After establishing his practice in Strong City, he travelled to Williamsburg, Franklin County, Kansas to marry his sweetheart whom he had met while in medical school. Myra Elizabeth Lomas was born at Lawrence, Essex County, Massachusetts, on 15 May 1869. She was the youngest daughter of David and Mary Hammersley Lomas. Myra Elizabeth was a graduate nurse from Christ Hospital in Topeka, Kansas. Jacob and Myra were married at St. Barnabas in Williamsburg on the 12 November 1902. Their union was blessed with two children, Earl Lomas Hinden, born 28 March 1905 and Helen Margaret Hinden, born 16 August 1906. The family was deeply grieved when Mrs. Hinden died 21 November 1911. She was a true and devoted Christian and a life long member of the Episcopal Church. She was a member of Falls Chapter #25 of Cottonwood Falls, Order of Eastern Star.
Dr. Hinden married Myra Ann Marvin the 27 August 1912. She was a graduate of the 1911 school of nursing at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka and a niece of the late Mrs. Hinden. The new Mrs. Hinden was Dr. Hinden's special nurse on may medical cases that they were called to treat during their years of practice in Chase County.
Jacob Hinden served his community of Strong City for 57 years. He served as mayor eight years, as a member of the school board many years, as Chase County Coroner 47 years, and as a Santa Fe surgeon for more than 50 years. He was a life member of Zeredatha Lodge No. 80, A.F. & A.M.; Knights Templar of Emporia; Topeka Consistory, Arab Shrine, Topeka; Low Twelve Club, Emporia; Union Lodge No. 15, I.O.O.F., Emporia; the American Medical Association and the Twin Cities Lions Club. Mr. Hinden died the 21 May 1960 in the Newman Memorial Hospital, Emporia, Lyon Co., Kansas. Both he and Mrs. Hinden are buried in the Strong City Cemetery, Strong City, Chase County, Kansas.
Graduated from the Kansas Medical College, Topeka. Received his license to practice, $2808, on April 18, 1902
