  MILITARY:
"Corpl. Co. G., 15th Vt. Infantry [gs]. Enlisted for the Civil War at Wheelock, Vt on Sep 17 1862 as a Private; mustered into Co. G, 15th Regiment of Infantry on Oct 22 1862; promoted Corporal Jan 01 1863; mustered out Aug 05 1863" [Roster of Vt. Volunteers, 1892].
"Came to Passumpsic as a young boy [AE18 per 1900.census]. He enlisted as a volunteer in the Civil War, serving 9 months" [1917.OBIT].
A percusion cap rifle of his (which carries a manufacture date of 1864) was given to his grson's grson (by his daughter, Louise) in the early 1960's and described by her as her "father's Civil War rifle" [interview with Louise].
Nor could it have been issued to his brother, Ben, as he mustered out Aug 05 1863, arriving home that same month [pension.records]
As in most such stories: yes, he was a veteran; but, as he mustered out before the the object rifle was manufactured, it could not have been issued to him by the army and is more likely simply his hunting rifle.
The boy who received the rifle in the 1960s, now a senior citizen, believes differently and writes:
"It seems that the 4 digits on those rifles was not the manufacture date, but the manufactory plant number. As such 1863 and 1865 rifles were manufactured in 1863 or earlier.
He states that he had an opportunity to visit with someone at a Massachusetts Historical Society event, who had several of them in his car trunk. After examining them, side-by-side, he found it very difficult to discern differences other than the 4 digit number.
Although this is another "possibility", I have seen no historical documentary evidence concerning what company may have manufactured these weapons, nor when they were in business, nor where.
I can only add that with a .50 cal. bore, it is capable of firing the "mini-ball" cartridges that were used in the war.
These contained an oblong lead projectile and the proper load of powder, were wrapped in paper and dipped in wax to keep the powder dry. The Army's entry physical exam consisted mostly of demonstrating an ability to bite the powder end of a cartridge and tear it off, exposing the powder to the percussion cap, and ramming it down the barrel of the rifle. No wonder women were able to enlist as men; and not get caught unless wounded!
  DEATH:
"Chronic Intestinal Nephritis" [dc] (dictionary defines "Nephritis" as "kidney disease") "at home of his daughter, Mrs. Nelson Rash, after an illness of nearly a year" [OBIT]. OBITUARY:
