"Civil War Pension records indicate that he suffered some health problems as a result of the war. He suffered from chronic diarrhea and hemorrhoids. The following is a quote from Ezra Gates the Nurse in charge of sick calls in the 15th Regiment, "his cough and diarrhea hung about him, also jaundiced through the winter and during the Gettysburg Campaign and was troubled with a lame leg and complained of Rheumatism and Piles and was sick when arrived home in August of 1863. Ezra continues," I very well remember this soldier from the first he was a jolly fellow and full of jokes and was always ready to do his duty when able. I took quite an interest in his welfare. "In Benjamin's pension records he indicated that he and his wife divorced a time long ago and he had no contact with his children. He said "I could not support them so they left me at my will"."
