Note: She would adopt her husband's politics and came to share his belief in racial/religious equality during their three year courtship. She was very interested in social issues. While she was not a diehard abolitionist in her youth, she had long believed that slavery was evil. She abhorred what she had witnessed while visiting her Southern relatives. Having spent most of her life in NY she was a loyal Unionist during the Civil War, like her Aunt Ellen. While her mother and sisters sympathized with the Confederacy. She became interested in the Women's Suffrage movement after her marriage to Gerrit. She was extremely fond of his grandmother Ann. There are letters from her to Florence Ledyard Cross, at the Cornell library, discussing Miss Cross' settlement house work for women in Brooklyn. The two were clearly good friends as Florence referred to her as Best Girl and she referred to Florence as Dear My Girl. Susan writes to encourage her Best Girl in her settlement work in Little Italy, and discusses the difficulties of such work. Susan expressed her desire that Miss Cross be careful while working in the NY slums. They discuss Jane Addams Hull House in Chicago. She was an avid amateur photographer.
