Note: Unlike his outgoing, athletic father, he was extremely shy and reserved. He once actually fainted while attempting to deliver a scientific paper; he was so frightened at the prospect of speaking in public. He had trouble making friends as a child because of his reserve and had delighted in the animals on his father�s farm and in the surrounding woods. This was how he first became interested in mammalogy. His systematic expertise earned his the considerable respect of his scientific colleagues, though his work was little known to the general public. Miller�s 400 titles included papers on paleontology, botany, anthropology and music.
His closest companion in childhood, and his greatest defender against neighborhood bullies, was his twin sister. She shared his love of music, nature and animals.
