Notes
a. Note:   H2
Note:   It seems that the birth date given by Margarethe as 15 September1888 may not be correct. There is no record in the Archive at Gdansk or at the St. Adelbrect's (the church the family attended near Rosteau) for that date. The ship's list indicates that she was 8 in August 1894 which means she could have been born on 15 September1885 or 86. The 1900 census indicates she was 15, which would again place her birth date as 1885 or 1886. Further research needs to be done.
Margarethe Stock arrived in the United States at Ellis Island on August 13, 1894 on the Rugia carrying about 900 person. She is listed as being 8 years old. Accompanying her Carl Stock, age 61; Justine (Augustine?) Stock, age 54; Pauline Stock, age 18; and Martha Stock, age 9 years, 6 months. Carl Stock and Augustine Stock may have been Margarethe's grandparents. She lists a Carl Stock and Augustina Kolosky as her parents on her marriage certificate.
Margarethe Stock had little to do with her mother, brothers, and sisters. She claims to have been either abused by her stepfather or just given up by her mother. I believe her mother to have been Henriette Renate Stock Veit who resided in Erie, Pennsylvania with her husband, Henry, and children (Emma, Henrietta, Emil and Paulina). Margarethe listed Henrietta as her mothers name on her Social Security Application.
Margarethe had always said her mother lived in Erie, PA. My father remembers visiting her mother once but the everyone had to stay outside while Margarethe went inside the house. Margarethe's son, Karl, recalled that one bother visited them once. He seems to think he had been in a mental hospital but could not recall his name or other details except that he had brought candy for him and the other children
At any rate, her Aunts raised her and she always had a special affinity for them especially her Aunt Laura. I remember her Aunt Laura as a very old lady who was sick and bedridden about 1956 or 1957. Margarethe refused to put Aunt Laura into a nursing home in part to repay her for the care Margarethe received as a child. Margarethe referred often to her Aunts Martha, Paulina and Laura while I was child. About 1952, we visited Aunt Martha Volk's husband and son in Fort Lauderdale, Florida shortly after the death of her Aunt Martha
Most of her work had been for wealthy persons as a housekeeper, nursemaid, or maid. She also work at the woolen mills in Cleveland, Ohio. After moving to Florida about 1947, Margarethe and her husband, Fred Meyer, operated a lunch counter in Orland, Florida for a few years.
